Symposium: Oceans, the new frontier of the Overseas Territories

The association Métamorphose Outremers is organizing a symposium on February 7 with the topic: “Oceans, the new frontier of the Overseas Territories.” The symposium will be attended by the Minister of the Overseas Territories, Annick Girardin, and the President of the CNES, Jean-Yves Le Gall.

The event will be structured around four round tables: one on scientific, economic and environmental issues; another on defense and protection issues; and two others with more geopolitical approaches: one taken by the by special issue of Le Monde/La Vie “Atlas of Waters and Oceans”; the other by photographer Michel Monteaux.

The Institute is participating in this meeting. Our experts in the Chronic Risks Division will discuss the challenges involved in the trans-Atlantic transport of desert dust and the contribution of these phenomena to episodes of atmospheric pollution.
Métamorphose Outremers is an internationally-focused association led by two journalists. It works to forge ties between the Territories, mainland France and Europe in the field of sustainable development.

Using its CHIMERE air quality model, Ineris has carried out simulations of unprecedented scale, covering the entire northern hemisphere at a spatial resolution of 10 km. These models provide an excellent illustration of the diversity of local atmospheric pollution such as nitrogen oxide, as well as larger-scale pollution by fine particles and ozone. With these extremely high resolution hemispheric simulations, it is becoming possible to monitor plumes of Saharan dust as they travel across the Atlantic all the way to the West Indies, where they frequently surpass air quality monitoring data thresholds.
